Brutal but powerful

I’d read some positive and negative reviews of this book before exploring it myself and after having read it, I am firmly in the camp of positive. This book will change you - it will change the way you perceive success, it will teach you empathy for abused or recalcitrant youngsters, it will show you what unconditional love looks like through the darkest hours. Yes it’s a hard, brutal, long read, and sometimes the detail that the author dives into seems pointless but the story is beautiful and I can only hope love as described in this book exists in reality. The naysayers will harp on about the unrealistic nature of parts of the book. Well to them I say, it’s fiction after all, and through her fiction, if the author can affect me this much emotionally, I would say it’s a success.

I have read many books in my time with themes of injury and loss, of damaged souls reacting to or against the wrongs inflicted upon them, but I have never been so deeply, inextricably involved in a character as I was with Jude. He lives in my heart. I’m tearing up just thinking about him. At times I had to put this book down and walk away to collect myself, so heartbroken I was actually crying. I don’t recall any other book affecting me this way as an adult. More than once I cursed it for being so beautifully written, so compelling, because it was too emotionally exhausting and I wished I could just stop. But the pain and darkness is balanced by joy and moments of incredible lightness and beauty. All of the characters are wonderful. Everything about this book is wonderful. It will be with me forever. I’m thrilled to have a new favourite author and I’ll be watching her closely.

Yanagihara has proven herself as a highly talented novelist with this epic contemporary story of love and a troubled life. Issues of childhood rejection & exploitation lead to such deep human despair that the reader feels the hopelessness so rawly that they are left gasping & unsure what to hope for. Questions of deep psychological despair, euthanasia & the love of friends, partners, parents, work colleagues weave a tale of such intricacy that I was left overwhelmed by the weight of it. I'm not sure this a book for everyone, but I'm sure everyone that reads it will be affected by it!

Yanagihara has proven herself as a highly talented novelist with this epic contemporary story of love and a troubled life. Issues of childhood rejection & exploitation lead to such deep human despair that the reader feels the hopelessness so rawly that they are left gasping & unsure what to hope for. Questions of deep psychological despair, euthanasia & the love of friends, partners, parents, work colleagues weave a tale of such intricacy that I was left overwhelmed by the weight of it. I'm not sure this a book for everyone, but I'm sure everyone that reads it will be affected by it!

Brutal but powerful

I’d read some positive and negative reviews of this book before exploring it myself and after having read it, I am firmly in the camp of positive. This book will change you - it will change the way you perceive success, it will teach you empathy for abused or recalcitrant youngsters, it will show you what unconditional love looks like through the darkest hours. Yes it’s a hard, brutal, long read, and sometimes the detail that the author dives into seems pointless but the story is beautiful and I can only hope love as described in this book exists in reality. The naysayers will harp on about the unrealistic nature of parts of the book. Well to them I say, it’s fiction after all, and through her fiction, if the author can affect me this much emotionally, I would say it’s a success.

I have read many books in my time with themes of injury and loss, of damaged souls reacting to or against the wrongs inflicted upon them, but I have never been so deeply, inextricably involved in a character as I was with Jude. He lives in my heart. I’m tearing up just thinking about him. At times I had to put this book down and walk away to collect myself, so heartbroken I was actually crying. I don’t recall any other book affecting me this way as an adult. More than once I cursed it for being so beautifully written, so compelling, because it was too emotionally exhausting and I wished I could just stop. But the pain and darkness is balanced by joy and moments of incredible lightness and beauty. All of the characters are wonderful. Everything about this book is wonderful. It will be with me forever. I’m thrilled to have a new favourite author and I’ll be watching her closely.
